Netherrealm Studios and Warner Bros. have given us a real treat! They have released the new teaser trailer for Mortal Kombat X. Words cannot describe how happy I am that this trailer was revealed. Mortal Kombat is one of my favorite video game franchises of all time. There is file footage of me as a baby holding a SNES controller and “playing” Mortal Kombat 3. Ever since then I have been a huge fan. After playing the last Mortal Kombat game released by Netherrealm Studios, I fell in love with the series all over again. What, with the unforgiving X-Ray moves that added that touch of goriness that we’ve all come to love about MK to the fun Tower Challenges that acted as mini-games, there was more than enough to love about the newest MK. That being said, let’s take a closer look at MK X‘s teaser, shall we?
The first thing that sticks out to me about the trailer is, unfortunately, the worst part of the trailer. A Wiz Khalifa track plays over Sub-Zero and Scorpion dueling to the death. I absolutely love hip-hop, but really? They couldn’t find a better rapper to feature? And I don’t really think that a hip-hop song really complements what was being shown on screen. Other than that, everything else is absolutely great.
It has been confirmed that it is not actual gameplay in the trailer, rather a pre-rendered CGI cutscene. There are also some tidbits of information that could hint towards possibly gameplay abilities. For example, we see Scorpion kick in Sub-Zero’s rib cage in X-Ray mode, leading me to believe that the X-Ray feature will return. Also the use of weapons may return due to Sub-Zero’s use of his ice-encrusted sword.
What has gotten me most excited for the game however seems to be the possible use of environmental attacks. In the trailer, Sub-Zero rips off a branch from a tree, freezes it and uses the ice/branch/sword thing to whack Scorpion in the face. If this is a hint to actual gameplay, then sign me up. NOW! I would absolutely love to play as my favorite characters using makeshift weapons with their own little touches to add a bit more blood to the battle.
Sadly, the trailer ends with Sub-Zero being decapitated by Scorpion’s famous hand spears. Sub-Zero is my favorite character and it sucks to see him lose almost every battle he is in with Scorpion. Regardless, this teaser has gotten me pumped for the newest entry in the MK franchise. Unfortunatel,y this game will be releasing for previous-gen systems as well as next-gen systems meaning that it will not TRULY be a next-gen title. That disappoints me, but I’ll be happy as long as Netherrealm delivers an awesome game. I have full faith in Netherrealm Studios to deliver a MK game that is even better than the previous iteration. I cannot wait until E3 to see some actual gameplay.
