1st Impression: Divergent [Teaser Trailer]

Summit Entertainment is banking on the movie adaptation of Veronica Roth’s Divergent being as big as their last book-to-movie craze, The Twilight Sage. Will it live up to the hype? I am not sure, as I have not yet read these books for comparison. However, the premise itself looks good, and we all know how I loved the Twilight books (don’t judge me). The cast is decent, with Shailene Woodley in the lead role of Tris and Theo James as Four, but it also boasts Maggie Q, Zoe Kravitz and heavy hitters Kate Winslet and Ashley Judd.

Set in the future, Chicago has become a dystopian society and is divided into five factions, each one meant to uphold a virtue of humanity. These factions are Amity (the peaceful), Abnegation (the selfless), Candor (the honest), Dauntless (the brave) and Erudite (the intelligent). One day each year, all 16-year-olds take a test that will tell them which faction they are best suited for. Once that happens, they decide whether to remain with their family or transfer to a new faction.

Beatrice “Tris” Prior was born into an Abnegation family, but it’s not for her. When she takes her test, the results are inconclusive: she doesn't “fit” into any one faction but shows equal aptitude for three of them—Abnegation, Erudite and Dauntless. This makes her “divergent” and she is warned never to share this information with anyone. Afterwards, she chooses Dauntless as her faction. But will she be found out as being divergent and suffer the consequences?

Here we get the first official trailer for the film, set to hit theatres March 21, 2014. Being the second book in the series, Insurgent, has already gotten the green light with a screenplay in the works, they are definitely assuming the hype is real.
