The Hunger Games: Catching Fire – Capitol Portraits Are Here!

November 22, 2013 can't come soon enough folks. If you are like me, you are waiting with baited breath to continue the saga of The Hunger Games.  In case you live in a box, Catching Fire, the second book in the series, begins after Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark‘s triumph at The Hunger Games. However, their victory is cut short as the Quarter Quell puts them back into the Games for the second time, with many surprises that I won't spoil.

In preparation for the second movie, we have been given “official” Capitol Portraits of many of the main characters in the movie. All of the characters are holding a single white rose – the “calling card” of President Snow (Donald Sutherland). Of course, Katniss  (Jennifer Lawrence) looks fantastic in her ethereal gown, showing her opposition by refusing to sit like all the others.  Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) is both dapper and boring in his all-white suit. Gale (TEAM GALE – sorry) gets some recognition as well, although he is in normal clothes. The rest of the cast have got their fancy going on as well – we have portraits of Cinna, Effie, Haymitch, Caesar Flickerman and President Snow.

However, the gang's all here plus some more. We have portraits for 3 new characters that are uber-important to this story. Former winners Finnick Odair (Sam Claflin), Johanna Mason (Jena Malone) and BeeTee (Jeffrey Wright) once again enter the arena with their portraits. Johanna looks great. She appears very stern and menacing in her gown, with it's high wooden- like neckline. I feel it captures her perfectly. BeeTee looks like a nerd, which works. Relatively unimposing, you wouldn't think he is a past winner. My issue here is with Finnick – no, not his costume which makes him look like a pirate. I am honestly not thrilled by the director's casting choice. Not that I hate Sam Claflin, but I don't really care about him, which is bad. Finnick is very integral to the story, and I was hoping for a better choice. (Besides, isn't he is supposed to be drop-dead gorgeous…umm yeah? But, that's a personal preference I guess.) Let's hope his acting sways me.
