MTR Invades NY Comic Con: 2011 Edition

This past weekend, the crew at MTR took to the streets of Manhattan to attend the 2011 NY Comic Con held at the Jacob Javits Center. The 675,000 square foot convention center was jam-packed with goodies and cos-players galore. If you went any of the four days, you more than understand the reach the Comic Con has to so many different people.

Now sure, you may be thinking “those conventions are for Star Wars nerds and comic junkies – I wouldn’t go to that”. That statement, my friends, could not be farther from the truth. Yes, there were Storm Troopers and people buying hundreds of dollars worth of comics. But there was so very much more available to see and do. There were costume contests, Kids Day, and panels where you could get previews of some of the hottest things out there, such as The Avengers movie, a panel so packed we couldn’t get in. (Sad face.) Each section of the Javits had something going on…and since the Con refreshingly had much more available floor space than last year, there indeed was a lot.

Besides the main show floor which showcased everything new in gaming and entertainment, there was an entire Autograph Alley, where fans could meet and greet some of there favorite celebrities. We had the luck to speak with WWE Hall of Famer Jerry “The King” Lawler and former ECW wrestler Raven. Signing autographs were James Marsters, Jason Momoa, Rose McGowan, Brian O’ Halloran, Jason Mewes, Kevin Smith, Eliza Dushku, Rick Fox, Erin Cummings and Chad Michael Murray, amongst others. The Alley also showcased the Batmobiles through the years, having the cars right inside to admire and take photos of. We also got to sit and watch a funny comedy performance by Angry Bob.

Artist Alley was a great area to obtain some fantastic artwork of all kinds from so many artists. If you were looking for a certain character or genre, chances are you found what you were looking for. If not, you could commission pieces from most artists, which is a pretty cool thing to do. Over in The Cultyard, we found booth after booth of books, art, old toys, collectibles and so many more eclectic things to buy. I actually bought myself an Angry Sack Boy from the game Little Big Planet. Even painters were doing their thing in The Cultyard:

Although not my thing personally, the upper floor of the center housed the Anime Festival – where you could probably find whatever it was you wanted regarding anime. Rich even got to test out an independent fighting game.

The main portion of the show floor was awesome. Hordes of brands were represented throughout the floor – Capcom, Marvel, AnchorBay, Legendary Pictures, Hasbro, Chevrolet, XBOX, Sprint, Cartoon Network, Square Enix and more. Also showcased were several new games coming out – and we were able to test out the gameplay before they hit the store shelves. We got to check out Prototype 2, Uncharted 3, Just Dance 3, The Black-Eyed Peas Experience, and 007 Goldeneye Reloaded, amongst others.

Chevy had a few cars on the floor like the new Sonic and the Bumblebee Edition Camaro.

They also had a flying fake version of the Sonic, which was pretty cool. It’s not everyday you have a car buzzing around over your head.

There was a huge comics portion of the center where you could meet writers and artists from top companies like DC, Marvel, Image, and Darkhorse.

Oh, and there were hundreds of cos-players too, but that’s a given. If you’d like to see some of the photos we took of them, head on over to our Facebook page.

Overall, this year’s Comic Con was a super fun event that I am sure was a big hit. I’d highly recommend taking time next year to go and see for yourself what I mean. MTR would like to thank NYCC’s Press Manager Roger Bilheimer for extending us our press passes and we look forward to another great event next year – which I am sure will be even bigger and better!
