Samsung Unpacks the Galaxy Note 4 & Galaxy Note Edge

I have been a Samsung Note owner since the first Note hit the market, and every time Samsung announces a new version I look forward to seeing how they will take a device that is the backbone of my productivity and make it better. This past Wednesday, Samsung took an amazing piece of hardware and changed the game again – not only announcing the Note 4 but also unveiling the Note Edge which took the Note in a new and exciting direction.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4

Let's take a look at the Note 4 which for starters got some noticeable spec bumps.

As you can see, the Note 4 improved on its predecessors' features and added more power-saving and camera features as well. The wide-angle front-facing camera now comes with 3.7 mega pixel resolution and f1.9 lens, which will surely make low light photography better and of course lead to better selfies. (Which is what we all really want, right?) The features that were standouts on the Galaxy S5 are front and center here as well, including the fingerprint scanner and heart rate monitoring. I felt the Note 4 has a wealth of new features that make upgrading from a Note 3 a must, but I do think that a lot of Note 3 owners may not be as easily swayed as I was. Check out the product photos from Samsung as well as photos I took of the device at the Unpacked event.

Samsung Galaxy Note Edge

The Galaxy Note Edge truly demonstrated the forward thinking of Samsung and took the “phablet” design into a whole new arena. The Galaxy Note Edge’s unique curved Edge screen provides quick access to often used apps, alerts and device functionality – even when the cover is closed, all with the swipe of a thumb. Users can also receive notifications directly on the Edge Screen while watching videos without disturbing their viewing. They can also use the Edge screen as a clock as well, which was showcased during the demo at the unpacked event. The Galaxy Note Edge has most of the same specs and features as the Note 4 albeit in a slight smaller package but the Edge screen definitely adds a new dimension to an already loaded device. I noticed that the Note 4 does have a slightly bigger battery. It is not a deal breaker, but still something worth mentioning if battery specs are a factor for purchase. Check out the specs and see for yourself.

The Galaxy Note Edge definitely impressed me and any hesitation I had about the curved screen disappeared as soon as held the device. There is definitely concern with regards to the curved glass breaking, but the Samsung glass is quite durable. However, I recommend that people looking to buy this device spend a bit of hands on time with the phone to make sure the new design is for you.

The Galaxy Note 4 will be available in “Charcoal Black,” “Frost White,” “Bronze Gold,” and “Blossom Pink” in global markets starting in October and the Galaxy Note Edge will be available in “Charcoal Black” and “Frost White” in select markets through Samsung’s retail channels, e-commerce and carriers later this year.

The Galaxy Note 4 will be available in the U.S. beginning in October and Galaxy Note Edge will be available later this fall. Both smartphones will be available at  AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon. U.S. Cellular will also launch the Galaxy Note 4.

Let's hear what you think about the Note 4 and Note Edge.
