Slick’s Hits: Zetsumetsu Kigu Shoujo: Amazing Twins

Zetsumetsu Kigu Shoujo: Amazing Twins (Extinct Device Girl: Amazing Twins)

While most of American programming is in repeats due to the mid-season break, I can always do what X-Clan said an look “to the East.” 2014 is already in swing with a crop of new anime for your average otaku to enjoy. First up, we have Zetsumetsu Kigu Shoujo: Amazing Twins, which technically started in 2013, but so what. This unfortunately short anime tells the tale of two twin sisters whose only real desire is to be able to live a normal life. Any idiot can tell you that when that is the wish of a main character, what they get will be anything but. I am hoping this show gets a full season because right now it is only a two-episode OVA. If the anime world was as impressed with the first episode as I was, I am pretty sure that we will see more of the Todoroki twins in the future.

The story introduces us to a world somewhat like that of the X-Men, where certain people possess the Incomprehensible Skill of Human beings, henceforth referred to as “ISH.” Those not born with ISH fear those who were and it seems that there might be a good reason for the fear. There are those who experiment with normal people and manage to bring out latent ISH abilities. This probably would not be an issue if it did not lead to side effects like insanity, homicidal rage and death. So yeah, experimenting with ISH is bad, but being born with it does not make a person evil. Amane Todoroki is a young girl who has low-level ISH abilities and uses them along with the members of her magic troupe, Nought. They all use ISH and call it magic in order to entertain people and try to keep food on the table. Amane believes that this is an important job because she wants regular people to see that ISH is not something for them to fear. Her reasoning behind that hits almost as hard as the opening sequence to Up. Amane has a twin sister named Lilianne that lost her physical form in their mother’s womb. She survived due to her incredibly high level ISH abilities. She cannot use her powers herself because she has no body. Instead, she merges (partially or completely) with Amane, who is able to use the power. All Amane wants is to make her sister feel like she isn’t a freak. She wants Lilianne (who usually resides within a teddy bear) to be able to live like a normal girl. Like I said earlier, when someone wants something so simple, it winds up being the hardest thing in the world to achieve. Many obstacles lie ahead for the twins and only together can they hope to surmount them.
