Slick’s Quick Hits: The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (game)

Spidey fans collectively just lost it

I don’t even know where to start on this one. I slept on the last Amazing Spider-Man movie tie-in game and was happily surprised at how good it was. In terms of Spidey’s movie games, it was the best since Spider-Man 2. While there was plenty of room for it to be better, it did a lot of things right, the most important of which was the free roaming ability. Even during the indoor and underground missions, Spidey had a lot of swinging room so that you could use most of his abilities. The story was not half bad either; it easily could have been a movie itself. I have my fingers crossed that Beenox will outdo themselves this time with the sequel, slated for spring of this year. My “wild guess” is that the release date will be one of three days: April 29, May 2 or May 6 as games usually come out on Tuesdays but movie games sometimes release the same day as a movie. Regardless of how the film does, Activision is going to come off like gangbusters because Spider-Man fans basically wet themselves at the above visual of our hero standing side by side with one of his most dangerous villains. Kraven the Hunter provides the dialogue for the trailer and what he says may provide some spoilers to the upcoming film. He mentions that Spidey is “unable to track down the prey that matters most” to him. This could refer to The Lizard, who was beaten in the last movie and game, but we know he always comes back. Or it could refer to Electro who we know is one of the villains in the new movie. This is what I mean by spoilers – if he is in this game, it seems that Spider-Man may not have brought him to justice by the end of the movie. We are unclear where the game takes place chronologically, but if the last game was any indication, it will be after the events of the film. And forget all of that when you have the 800lb gorilla in the room: Spidey and Kraven working together! “Allow me to help you. I will make you what you were meant to be: the ultimate hunter.” These are Kraven’s ominous words and they allude to one possible aspect of the game which has not been used since Spider-Man: Web of Shadows, the element of choice.

“Never forget, what you do defines who you are. Let’s see if a hero or a menace crawls from the dark.”

This is how Kraven closes the trailer and this is why Activision can take my money this May. Enjoy the trailer.

P.S. might just be because it is a movie tie-in, but it’s nice to see that Activision did not forget Nintendo on this one. I am interested (and hope) to see that Spidey has additional options using the Wii U tablet controller.

P.P.S. Beenox, please give us more inappropriate Black Cat banter and interaction. Make her a constant in this game instead of a side mission.
