Splatterhouse: The Review by Josh

Splatterhouse is one of those games that is equally entertaining and frustrating. The premise of the game is simple. Your girlfriend is kidnapped by a mad scientist and the only way to save her (and yourself) is to put on an evil mask and transform into a jacked guy who looks a lot like John Cena. All the mask asks for in return is blood. Lots of blood!

Splatterhouse is by far the most violent game I have ever played and as you progress through the levels, it only gets more violent. At one point you fight an 8’ tall fat guy with chainsaw arms, and only by ripping off one of his arms and chainsawing him with it can you defeat him. All this while the mask urges you to, and I quote, “Show him why we call it Splatterhouse!”

If you enjoy gratuitous violence along with sarcastic humor then definitely pick up this game. As you play through it, you will unlock access to all three previous Splatterhouse games as well as a second mask that will give you different powers, which adds to the replay value.

Unfortunately, the game is not without its flaws, and they are major. You will die a lot! And this is not due to enemies, but wonky controls that cause you to fall to your doom. Also, the time it takes the game to load back up between deaths is extremely long (over a minute in most cases) and you will no doubt find certain areas where you will die 20 times in a row. Also, if you die after a cut scene, you have to rewatch the cut scene when you spawn back to life. Frustrating as hell!

Overall the game is a lot of fun and if I had to make a comparison, I would say it is similar in fun factor to God of War 3, but falls far short in the control area. The game has a lot of potential and I am hoping that they fix all of these issues in the sequel. Also, the game is long so buy instead of rent. You won’t be disappointed!
