The Dark Pictures – Man of Medan: Making a Ghost Ship

The developers of The Dark Pictures – Man of Medan wish to show you how they create nautical terror. A good horror title is all about environment and they wanted to create a ghost ship as realistic as possible. This dev diary shows what went into that.

The first Dev Diary showcases the creation of the menacing abandoned vessel that serves as the setting of Man of Medan. The developers describe how they formed the claustrophobic and foreboding atmosphere of the ship by carefully crafting the audio, lighting and architecture of the game, researching real-world military vessels, even capturing impulses and ambient sounds from these ships. Thoughtful and moody lighting, engrossing audio and compelling characters, along with Man of Medan’s suspenseful narrative form a completely engrossing and deeply unsettling gameplay experience.

Developed by Supermassive Games, the critically-acclaimed studio behind the cult-classic thriller Until Dawn, The Dark Pictures – Man of Medan is a series of standalone cinematic horror games linked by one common element: that every playable character can live and every playable character can die throughout the story, yielding numerous possible endings and near-limitless replayability. The game will be anchored by a talented cast of actors, including stars Shawn Ashmore (X-Men, Quantum Break) and Pip Torrens (The Crown, Star Wars: The Force Awakens), whose in-game likenesses are rendered in vivid detail.

The Dark Pictures – Man of Medan is slated for a 2019 launch on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
