“The Host” Trailer: The Battle for Contact Lenses has Ended

Truth moment: I have been trying to fully read “Twilight” author Stephenie Meyer‘s book “The Host” for a while now. I have read a little of it, but I haven't quite had the chance to sink my teeth into another 600-page book. Perhaps I should continue though, as the film adaptation of the novel is set to be released on March 29, 2013, plus, we already have a teaser trailer almost a year in advance. The movie will star Saoirse Ronan (“Hanna”) and is directed by Andrew Niccol.

The plot of the book/movie is simple: aliens have invaded the earth and have begun to take over the bodies and minds of all humans. After they inhabit the body of a human, the alien “souls” erase the human occupant and establish their claim over it’s body and mind.

Melanie Stryder‘s (Ronan) body has been inhabited by one of the aliens named Wanderer, but she herself refuses to completely lose herself and give in. She is also a part of a group of “rebels” who have tried to ward off complete inhabitation. The “Seeker”, who is in charge of Melanie's body, starts to worry about Wanderer's lack of control over her mind. Wanderer is flooded with Melanie's memories and her powerful feelings for Jared (her love interest –this is a Meyer book isn’t it) and her brother Jamie, and Wanderer soon finds herself having feelings for Melanie's former companions. She becomes desperate to find out whether they are still alive, and eventually becomes a part of the rebel group.

However, none of what I just told you about this is in this trailer you are about to watch. That’s right. NONE OF IT. It is just a weird trailer full of people wearing contacts that have been taken over by the aliens. Like a weird version of MJ’s  “Black or White” video, but no one is dancing. Oh, and there’s the earth.  I don’t like it, and quite frankly, it doesn’t make me care about this movie. But, give it a peek and let me know what you think.

  1. Ohhhhhhhhh NOOOOOOOOO Andrea TELL ME THAT’S an early April Fools *makes gagging noises* It’s really not that good *sob*. . . not good romance and not good porn. Where’s a gun, literature is officially down the crapper!

  2. That’s some crazy shit. I can see where plagiarism can come into play. Smooth jack move on her part eliminating the need to cultivate a fan base.

  3. Yea the books are quite different the only thing in common when I read “The Host” was the fact I found the leading males to be somewhat douche-y LOL! As for Shades of Grey, to make a long story short–a Twifanfic author wrote a very popular errrrr “alternative” Twilight. Since Twilight does still appeal to Mommies/Women with a “please rescue me hero” complex, Twilight (the original is as popular with them as it is with Tweens)–they write fanfics just like teen fans. Only when the MOMS write fanfics of Twilight–it all goes real “Skinamax” real fast. “Shades of Grey” was just such a fanfic–and thanks to some rather (in my opinion) watered down BSDM elements, the fic became REAL popular. So the author shopped it and got a publishing deal, her book is becoming the sleeper hit that Twilight once was before everyone discovered it. However a lot of fans (in particular the ones who read the old fanfic) feel that the author capitalized on the popularity of Twilight to get her own book made (the book deviates very little from the original fanfic), plus by writing it initially as a “fanfic” (which technically one should not publish, as it scoots on the edge of plagiary) she manipulated the Twilight fan in order to make an “instant” audience for herself. And it worked LOL!

  4. Myst, As always I appreciate the insight. There is a definite push to capture the “twihard” demo based on the merch and adverts promoting this movie. Fans of the books not appreciating this is not a shocker since the book and film fanbases are definitely different to a degree. While I have seen many that appreciate both mediums I also see those that solely exist to support “Team Jacob” and “Team Edward” lol.

What’s the premise for 50 Shades of Grey?

  5. *Hits the buzzer* Sorry the Twilight fanbase is not feeling this one. As part OF that fanbase–I remember when the BOOK dropped, we were not pleased. To quote the fans mostly went: “Hey what the f–. . . it’s TWILIGHT minus all the good stuff and with an alien stuck on top.” No bueno! So uh no the true Twilight fans are not “The Host” fans. Most Twilight fans (particular the adult women) want that little Fanfic turned novel “50 Shades of Grey” to get made

  6. What, no giant lizard monsters, vomiting on school girls, and tentacle porn?

  7. Not with that Twilight fanbase. They cast some “beautiful” people which will make the adaptation appealing. You know how that shit goes
