Why You Should Be Watching: Suits

Truth  moment. When I originally started seeing promos and posters last year for USA’s newest show Suits”, I had no interest in it. Law shows do not appeal to me at all. But, given it’s lead-in by “Burn Notice” and my love for (most) USA shows, we gave it a shot. Boy, was it worth it, because this show knocks it out of the park.

Now seven episodes in to its sophomore season, “Suits” has, in my humble opinion, situated itself as one of cable’s best weekly shows. Highly consider that statement, being that the rest of my list includes heavy-hitters like “Game of Thrones”, “Spartacus”, “True Blood”, “Boardwalk Empire”. Simply put, this show is ahhh-mazing.

If you have never caught an episode of this show, here’s the synopsis straight from USA's website:

“Even the best lawyer in New York City can use some help.”

“While running from a drug deal gone bad, Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams), a brilliant young college-dropout, slips into a job interview with one of New York City's best legal closers, Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht). Tired of cookie-cutter law school grads, Harvey takes a gamble by hiring Mike on the spot after he recognizes his raw talent and photographic memory.

Mike and Harvey are a winning team. Even though Mike is a genius, he still has a lot to learn about law. And while Harvey may seem like an emotionless, cold-blooded shark, Mike's sympathy and concern for their cases and clients will help remind Harvey why he went into law in the first place. Mike's other allies in the office include the firm's best paralegal Rachel (Meghan Markle) and Harvey's no-nonsense assistant Donna (Sarah Rafferty) to help him serve justice.

Proving to be an irrepressible duo and invaluable to the practice, Mike and Harvey must keep their secret from everyone including managing partner Jessica (Gina Torres) and Harvey's arch nemesis Louis (Rick Hoffman), who seems intent on making Mike's life as difficult as possible.”

Now, you’re probably saying – Gabriel Macht…wasn’t he “The Spirit”? Yes. Yes he was, and you know what? His portrayal of Harvey Specter has completely erased that movie from my mind along with anything else he may have ever starred in. I no longer care. Macht IS Harvey, and Harvey IS the best asshole lawyer on TV today. Forget any of those “Law and Order” guys. #WWHD. It's as easy as that. The man has a hashtag! Every other lawyer on TV should go work with Bull Shannon and move on down to Night Court. Seriously, scram other guys. I simply adore Harvey Specter. His sarcasm and wit are matched pound for pound against his perfectly timed use of movie lines. I love that he took a chance on Mike, and is such a good match alongside Managing Partner Jessica Pearson; all while being the effortless egomanic that he is. The writing for his character is flawless, and makes this show what it is.

On to Mike Ross. You have to love Mike. Even though he pretty much starts off the series as a criminal, it doesn’t matter. Lied about graduating from Harvard Law? Who cares? Cheated for people so they could pass the LSAT exam? Meh. You want him to succeed and get away from his terrible best friend and girlfriend (I never liked her), who are holding him down. Mike is “that guy” you want as your best friend. He is smart and a genuine good person, and Pearson Hardman is his big break. Harvey and Mike are the perfect lawyer/associate pair and they play off of each other like Jordan and Pippen. I am enjoying Season 2 because Mike is actually getting his feet wet in the “case” aspect of this show. They are making him more and more useful in the day to day legal side-stories. Side note: In 2011, Patrick J. Adams’ portrayal of Mike Ross earned him the honor of being only the third actor from a USA show to earn a SAG nomination. Pretty damn good, eh?

The rest of the cast perfectly rounds out this legal drama. Sarah Rafferty is stellar as Donna, Harvey’s no-nonsense assistant. Her delivery of one-liners alone make this show worth watching. Meghan Markle is great as Rachel Zane, and I am eager to see where her relationship with Mike goes in future episodes. It is so easy to hate Louis (Rick Hoffman), since he goes against Harvey as much as possible and is so sneaky and smarmy. The characters all have their own depth, and you get sucked in to all of the happenings at Pearson Hardman.

Honestly, each episode of “Suits” is better than the last, and I urge you to catch up and get into it as much as I have. “Suits” airs Thursday nights at 10pm EST on USA…and always remember #WWHD?
