1st Impression: What happens when you take a bit of Robert De Niro’s stalker film The Fan and sprinkle in a bit of Stephen King’s Misery? You get The Fanatic! The Fanatic is directed by Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst and stars John Travolta and Devon Sawa. Travolta plays an obsessive fan named Moose who stalks his favorite action star (Sawa) and proceeds to make the actor’s life a living hell.
It has been a while since Travolta has played a truly villainous role and he definitely turned up the crazy in the trailer for The Fanatic. While this film has similarities to films like The Fan and Misery I am curious to see what Durst does to set this film apart from those well-known thrillers. Travolta, when motivated, can put together memorable performances and a film like this with its lower budget and simplistic plot may be just what doctor ordered to give Travolta’s career a shot in the arm.
Could this villainous turn get Travolta back in the mainstream spotlight? We are only a month away from finding out.
