1st Impression: Cloak & Dagger make their small screen debut this summer on the Freeform network. For those of you wondering what the hell Freeform is allow me to break it down. Freeform was previously known as The Family Channel then rebranded to Fox Family Channel and after its sale to Disney in 2001 it was rebranded as the ABC Family. The network was rebranded once more as Freeform back in 2016 and remains a Disney owned network. The channel gears its content to teenagers and young adults.
Given the demographic that Freeform is trying to capture I am not shocked to see Cloak & Dagger debuting on this channel as the teen angst direction the series is using is tailor-made for the channel and the target demographic. My concern is that the show and characters will not gain the same level of traction as Marvel shows on ABC, Netflix or any other mainstream networks offering Marvel programming. Cloak & Dagger are street level heroes much like Spider-Man and Daredevil and I feel that Netflix would have been a better home for this series plus weaving it into the Netflix Marvel Universe would have been the smart play due to the crossover potential.
We'll have to wait and see how the audience react to the show once it airs this summer. What did you think of the trailer? Will you check the show out when airs?
