Sine Mora EX

If you missed this arcade shooter last generation, August 8 is your chance.

Sine Mora is a side-scrolling shoot’em up that provides a unique challenge, where time is the ultimate factor. Mixing classic shooter sensibilities with contemporary presentation, Sine Mora is a gorgeous shoot’em up offering both a Story Mode that weaves an over-the-top tale and an Arcade Mode that provides deep, satisfying gameplay to challenge fans of the genre. With many ways to manipulate time, Sine Mora features over 50 weapon combinations to complete each beautiful stage that fits to the player’s skills with scaling difficulty. Soundtrack composed by Akira Yamaoka and featuring boss designs by Mahiro Maeda.

Lost Technology

A Japanese classic makes its way West August 9.

In the lands controlled by humans, one fights in the name of peace and justice, one battles for no reason other than to fight, one battles out of greed, to gain more land, and like this, they all faded in the fighting.

West of Loathing

The greatest game ever comes to PC & Mac on August 10 via Steam.

West of Loathing is a single-player slapstick comedy adventure role-playing game set in the wild west of the Kingdom of Loathing universe. Its gameplay is a hybrid of point-and-click adventure and open-world RPG. The stick-figure characters advance through branching narratives and engage in tactical turn-based combat. Graphically, it transforms KoL’s hand-drawn art style into a 3D diorama (think Paper Mario) replete with animation, sound, and music.

Ironcast

August 10, Nintendo Switch puts the might of iron in your hands.

Battles are fought by generating resource nodes which in turn drive the Ironcast’s various weapons and systems. Players must choose how to spend these nodes wisely, either offensively in order to cripple and destroy their opponents, or defensively, if they suspect a barrage of incoming weapons fire is due.

Flip Wars

This tense multiplayer action game will have you stomping to flip over panels—and unwitting opponents! To win, flip the most panels to your color in local battles, online*, or single-player. The more you flip, the faster you’ll move in a mad dash to nab power ups. Increase your flip range, turn invincible, and more across 3 modes and 12 arenas!

Phantom Trigger

Give Stan a hand on PC or Switch August 10.

Stan is losing control. The phantom realm brings arcane hexes into a pulsing neon reality, where demons fight in packs and use every trick they have to break your defense. Throw spells and traps mid-combo, ride the edge of control and chaos in this fresh take on action combat. You are your own worst enemy in Phantom Trigger.

Time Recoil

Time is running out on your PC August 10.

As a member of the Recoilers you have the ability to slow down time as you kill your enemies. Your goal is to kill Mr. Time. He possesses a time-based weapon of mass destruction. Unless you accomplish your goal, there is no future.

Code 7

August 11, PC & Mac users will need to crack the code in order to survive.

What would you do if you found yourself trapped on an eerie space station with nothing but a computer? Play as the hacker Alex and save the world from your keyboard as a sinister A.I. rises from the corner of the universe… but you are not the only one who acts from the shadows. Monsters lurk in the dark and soon humanity itself is in danger. When analog and digital worlds collide, only a master of both can survive.

Looterkings

August 11, please put clothes on them so I don’t have to see Goblin junk! On PC via Steam.

Looterkings is a procedural dungeon-crawler you can play online in coop-mode with up to 3 of your friends. Loot as much as you can on your way up from the dark caves beneath earth to the surface, gear up and reach your ultimate goal ravaging the hallowed halls of the Elven Queen, eventually.

Team Racing League

August 11, use teamwork to be a complete jerk to the other team.

Team racing?! But why? We’re making this game because we’re not happy with current multiplayer race games. They use rubber banding or overpowered bonus mechanics (like blue shells) to keep races exciting for players that can’t keep up. But we think multiplayer races can be exciting for everyone, without punishing the skilled players. So that’s why we made TRL.

MOVIES

Wait, it’s Sunday and I already got through video games? It seems I found a better source of information. Still, I will update if I hear of any more games. Now we move on to movies. This week is definitely a bit of a lull… I mean c’mon, Open Water 3 – seriously? I never even knew they made a part two! Thankfully the home releases are slightly better.

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword

New Releases This Week - King Arthur: Legend of the Sword

Robbed of his royal lineage as a child when his uncle usurped the throne, Arthur (Charlie Hunnam) returns to the kingdom once ruled by his father and draws the legendary sword Excalibur from the stone. He must then learn to harness the sword’s power in order to lead a rebellion against the tyrannical Vortigern (Jude Law) and reclaim his birthright.

Snatched

New Releases This Week - Snatched

A free-spirited woman (Amy Schumer) convinces her reluctant, anxious mother (Goldie Hawn) to join her on the exotic vacation she’d been planning with her boyfriend before they broke up. However, their trip to South America turns into a wild adventure when they escape from an attempted kidnapping.

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Set 1 (Slick’s Pick of the Week)

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Season 1 [Limited Edition] [Blu-ray] - Front_Standard

I am going to say this is one of the greatest anime of all time. Heavily stylized and completely over the top, enter a story about a lineage of evil fighters. Based on one of the longest running manga ever (1987-it’s still going!), the Joestar family must face off against vampires, the near-invincible race that created vampires and all other types of super-powered maniacs.

The first season covers two story arcs: Phantom Blood and Battle Tendency. In Phantom Blood, Jonathan Joestar (the first JoJo) battles his former foster brother, Dio Brando, who is now an insane vampire. Despite a tragic end and fifty year timeskip, this directly leads into Battle Tendency, where a young Joseph Joestar (grandson of Jonathan and also JoJo) must defeat the Pillar Men. This trio are the last of an ancient race that inadvertently created vampires. JoJo must defeat them to save not only his own live but all of humanity!

This is where the “to be continued” vines came from.

Kung Fu Yoga

Kung Fu Yoga [Blu-ray/DVD] [2 Discs] [2017] - Front_Standard

A Chinese archaeologist (Jackie Chan) teams up with an Indian professor (Amyra Dastur) and her assistant (Disha Patani) to track down a long-lost treasure. The trio navigate dangerous rebels and double crosses while hunting for the buried jewels in this action comedy written and directed by Stanley Tong.

The Hunter’s Prayer

The Hunter's Prayer [Blu-ray] [2017] - Front_Standard

A tormented hit man (Sam Worthington) is assigned to kill a young woman (Odeya Rush), but finds himself unable to do the deed. The pair then end up on the run in Europe, as they work together to evade assassins and get revenge on those responsible for the murder of her parents. Based on the novel For the Dogs by Kevin Wignall.

IN THEATERS

Annabelle: Creation

Former toy maker Sam Mullins and his wife Esther are happy to welcome a nun and six orphaned girls into their California farmhouse. Years earlier, the couple lost their 7-year-old daughter Annabelle in a tragic car accident. Terror soon strikes when one of the girls finds a seemingly innocent doll that seems to have a life of its own.

The Nut Job 2: Nutty By Nature

And probably still better than The Emoji movie.

Surly (Will Arnett) the squirrel and his animal friends spring into action when the evil mayor (Bobby Moynihan) of Oakton plans to bulldoze the park that they live in.

The Glass Castle

Based on a memoir, four siblings must learn to take care of themselves as their responsibility-averse, free-spirit parents both inspire and inhibit them. When sober, the children’s brilliant and charismatic father captured their imagination, teaching them physics, geology, and how to embrace life fearlessly. But when he drank, he was dishonest and destructive. Meanwhile, their mother abhorred the idea of domesticity and didn’t want to take on the work of raising a family.

Ingrid Goes West

Following the death of her mother and a series of self-inflicted setbacks, young Ingrid Thorburn escapes a humdrum existence by moving out West to befriend her Instagram obsession, a Los Angeles socialite named Taylor Sloane. After a quick bond is forged between these unlikeliest of buddies, the facade begins to crack in both women’s lives — with comically malicious results.

Whose Streets?

An account of the Ferguson uprising as told by the people who lived it. The filmmakers look at how the killing of 18-year-old Michael Brown inspired a community to fight back and sparked a global movement.

Good Time

After a botched bank robbery lands his younger brother in prison, Constantine embarks on a twisted odyssey through the city’s underworld in an increasingly desperate attempt to get his brother out of jail. Over the course of one night, Constantine finds himself on a mad descent into violence and mayhem as he races against the clock to save his brother and himself, knowing their lives hang in the balance.

The Only Living Boy In New York

After graduating from college and moving to an apartment, young Thomas Webb befriends an alcoholic neighbor who dispenses worldly wisdom alongside shots of whiskey. Webb’s world soon comes crashing down when he learns that his father is having an affair with a beautiful and seductive woman. Determined to break up the relationship, Thomas winds up sleeping with her, launching a chain of events that will change everything that he thinks he knows about his family and himself.

Pilgrimage

In the 13th century, Irish monks embark on a reluctant pilgrimage to escort their monastery’s holiest relic to Rome. Their mission soon becomes fraught with danger as they trek across a rugged landscape that’s been ravaged by years of tribal warfare.

Open Water 3: Cage Dive

Three friends from California head to the rugged Australian coast for a cage-dive encounter with great white sharks. When a massive wave suddenly destroys their boat, they find themselves floating in the ocean with a swarm of hungry man-eaters.

R.A.G.E. Works - logo

That does it for yet another installment of New Releases This Week. Before I go, I just had to slip one more trailer in to get that horrible fish smell out from Open Water 3. It’s time to get a real shark movie back on the screen and it debuts tonight!
