What is it?
The Monster SuperStar Hotshot is a portable Bluetooth speaker that provides Monster’s signature sound in a portable package for less than $100.
What does it do?
The Monster SuperStar Hotshot provides portable Monster sound with NFC Tap 2 Pair coupled with an 8-hour battery life. The SuperStar Hotshot also pulls double-duty as a speakerphone and includes a carabiner to toss the speaker onto a backpack. Users looking to not drain their phone battery via Bluetooth can also connect to the speaker via a 3.5 mm jack.
What’s wrong with it?
While the price point and Monster-quality sound are impressive, I would have liked to see the speaker be waterproof. If you are pitching this as a portable speaker to take to the beach, picnics, or poolside, making it waterproof should have been a no-brainer, especially when so many competitors are making their portable speakers waterproof.
Why do you/don’t you need it?
The attractive price point makes this a solid pickup for anyone looking for a portable speaker to use in a small room or office. The sound quality is as good as can be expected from a speaker this size and the quality sound Monster is known for is definitely there. However, I wouldn’t recommend cranking up the bass on your music as a speaker this small will not do it justice.
Charging the SuperStar Hotshot is easy with the included Micro USB cable that can charge the speaker via a PC or portable battery pack within 90 minutes to two hours.
My Take:
Monster never disappoints when it comes to their devices, although some see them as being extremely overpriced. The SuperStar Hotshot speaker has a $69.99 MSRP but can be found for about $50 at most big box stores putting right in the mix with other competitors. Sound quality, long battery life, and portability make this a solid recommendation, but those looking for something waterproof unfortunately will need to look elsewhere or opt for the more expensive Superstar BackFloat which is a shame since the SuperStar Hotshot screams “take me to a pool or a beach”. Let’s hope a future incarnation takes that into consideration.
