RW Review: Alen BreatheSmart 45i Air Purifier

I’ve used an air purifier in my bedroom for easily over two decades, and now with the threat of COVID-19, it seems they’ve finally caught on more than ever. Many companies have come onto the scene in the past two years, but it’s Alen who caught my attention. Since then, the Texas-based company has been around 2005 and has maintained an incredibly positive userbase, becoming an expert and innovator in the field. Their products are now being used in restaurants and businesses across the country to help reduce fears over harmful particles in the air, but are they worth a shot in your home? Let’s take a look.

Alen was kind enough to send one of their most popular models, the BreatheSmart 45i, for a review. Still, they also produce a variety of other air purifiers in different sizes and shapes. They range from the largest size being their 75i which covers 1300 sq feet, to their smaller unit being the T500 True HEPA Tower that handles a range of 500 sq feet and has plenty of models in between. If the place you are putting this in is larger than the recommended size, it will still clean the air, but it will work less efficiently than it should. Upon purchase, all models include an air filter, which will require replacement once every 12 months.

It’s the aesthetic of Alen’s products that make them stand out – not just in a store but in your home. For example, all of their air purifiers come with customizable options to help them better blend seamlessly wherever you put them. This means you can get the cover to all of these items in their classic eggshell white, metallic steel looks, faux wood colors, and textured graphite. You might not think air purifiers could look attractive when you consider they are generally clunky boxes pumping out oxygen. Still, Alen has made it so their units can help tie a room together and offer some cosmetic fun along with their functionality.

The BreatheSmart 45i cleans the air in any room it’s in every 30 minutes and features a particle sensor technology that implements a system of changing colors to indicate whether the air in a room is dirty or clean. For example, if the machine detects foreign elements in the air that could be harmful, the lights will change to warm colors like purple and red to let you know, then work their way to cool colors, ultimately landing on blue to inform you this space is clean! Likewise, there is a light indicator for your filter, warning you with plenty of time when it’s going to need replacing rather than leaving it a guessing game.

The 45i is almost two feet tall and around 15 inches wide, so make sure you find a nice place to put this. Guidelines are included for how to make the machine work optimally, which you’ll want to follow to get the most of your air purifier. This device also ionizes the air. It includes a built-in timer if you don’t want it constantly running, five-speed settings, and an automatic setting that lets the machine decide what your room needs. It is another feature I found very nice.

One of the most annoying things about my last air purifier was its light. I like to use my purifier at night, but this chunky device had one enormous orange indicator that shone brighter than a Christmas tree. For the entirety of its existence, I had a quarter taped over that light to help cut down the brightness so I could sleep without thinking there was a lighthouse in my room directing boat traffic. While the Alen model has much more light-up features, it also can disable the lights. Of course, if you use your purifier at night, the blue lights are much calmer than that blazing orange I mentioned, but being able to turn them off completely is such a tremendous quality-of-life feature that probably excites me more than how well the unit functions.

Speaking of quality-of-life, air purifiers are notoriously loud. My last one doubled as a sound machine, where I could hear the sonorous odes of angry dolphins smacking into a brick wall for hours until I fell asleep. With the 45i, the sound is much more subtle. This machine has the four settings we discussed earlier; even the most powerful one is not as loud as my old unit. Of course, I don’t mind having some white noise while I sleep, so you can still have that here, but if you wanted it to be barely noticeable if it’s in a place with lots of foot traffic – you can have that too. Just leave it on the lowest setting, and you won’t hear a peep from it!

All Alen devices are intended to be used 24/7 and use less power than a 50-watt lightbulb – quite an impressive feat! With so much long-term wear and tear put on them, it’s reassuring to know that these air purifiers come with a lifetime guarantee. However, that guarantee has a caveat – the customer must register their product AND have an active filter subscription. It’s not like they are asking you to jump through hoops, and having an active filter sub is not a bad idea, but worth noting the rules if this is something you’d like to do.

The BreatheSmart 45i packs a lot of power and features into one stylish-looking air purifier, but the best part about this and all of their devices is how intuitive they are to use. Pop this unit out of the box, place it somewhere on your floor near a wall, power it on, and at that point, you can walk away and let it do what it does best. Air purifiers are never complicated products, to begin with, but the range of functions it has and how they work has never been easier to plug and play!

Whether you have allergies, want to clean the dust out of the air, or want to prevent a stagnant airflow or kill hazardous air particles, Alen’s range of air purifiers has you covered. These aren’t your parent’s air purifiers; these are well-designed, fashionable, and highly powerful machines that do their job right and ensure clean, breathable air with little fuss from the customer. Let the Alen BreatheSmart 45i do the dirty work for you, so you can relax and breathe in peace.
