I received an email from Marvel yesterday afternoon that stated a huge surprise was going to be announced on The View. We then fast forward twenty four hours and Thor is now a woman. This is not a rule 63 cosplay ladies and gents but a legitimate bonafide change.
Now, I know fans will get all bent out of shape because of the inscription on Mjölnir which states “Whosoever holds this hammer, if HE be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor” but honestly I think it is something different and adds a new layer of storytelling to a character who I personally consider bland. If you remember there was a time when Loki was a woman and the world didn’t end. This change is permanent for the time being and should make things interesting for the character. Now, the real question is, who wields the hammer of Thor and why was she chosen? All of these questions will hopefully be answered this October.

Series writer Jason Aaron emphasizes, “This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is THOR. This is the THOR of the Marvel Universe. But it’s unlike any Thor we’ve ever seen before.”
THOR is the latest in the ever-growing and long list of female-centric titles that continues to invite new readers into the Marvel Universe. This female THOR is the 8th title to feature a lead female protagonist and aims to speak directly to an audience that long was not the target for Super Hero comic books in America: women and girls.
