1st Impression: When you hear Fantasy Island is coming to the big screen the initial reaction is to scream Why!!!!! The thing is that this big-screen version of Fantasy Island is not what you’d expect. Gone is smooth delivery of Ricardo Montalban’s Mr. Roark and the excitement of Tattoo screaming “Da plane! Da plane!” and in its place are scarier and far more sinister fantasies that remain far departures from the guest’s intended fantasy.
Mr. Roark ( Michael Peña ) is still part of the island’s experiences in this remake but his agenda much like that of the island is not what it seems. At first, I did not think Pena could pull this type of a roll off because of his comedic chops but I was pleasantly surprised at the blend of sinister charm he exhibited in the trailer.
I hope this movie is an R-rated horror film and not the usual PG-13 nonsense that passes for horror nowadays. I am intrigued about this film as I grew up watching Fantasy Island and think going the horror route although unexpected is a smart play. We’ll see if I’m right when Fantasy Island hits theaters Valentine’s Day 2020.
