This fall, John Cena returns to the box office with a boom in a new film from Pierre Morel called Freelance.

John Cena pairs up with Alison Brie of Community fame, alongside Christian Slater and Juan Pablo Raba, for this new action-comedy film, which features some classic cliches, married with a new self-aware twist. If you enjoy 90’s style Stallone and Schwarzenegger flicks, you’ll definitely dig what Freelance has to offer.

John Cena as Mason Pettis in Freelance

Cena plays a former military operative named Mason Pettis, long since retired after an unfortunate accident that injured him and left his teammates KIA. Now a married lawyer raising his daughter with an uninterested partner, Cena’s character gets pulled back into the fray when Christian Slater’s character hires him to keep a journalist (Alison Brie) in South America safe.

The only problem is, she’s a package deal, and he must now protect his one-time love interest along with a very quirky dictator who she’s doing a story on, played by Raba. Hijinx, explosions, and semi-nudity ensue, and a good time is had by all!

Check out the trailer for Freelance below:

And here’s the official synopsis for the movie:

Ex-special forces operative Mason Pettis (John Cena) is stuck in a dead-end desk job when he reluctantly takes on a freelance gig to provide private security for washed-up journalist Claire Wellington (Alison Brie) as she interviews the ruthless—but impeccably dressed—dictator, Juan Venegas (Juan Pablo Raba). When a military coup breaks out just as she’s about to get the scoop of a lifetime, the unlikely trio must figure out how to survive the jungle AND each other in order to make it out alive!

From Pierre Morel the dynamic director of TAKEN and PEPPERMINT, FREELANCE is written by Jacob Lentz and is a Relativity Media Production.

This isn’t the first time Cena has suited up for an action movie role, including his starring role in the original Marine movie, as well as more recently in HBO Max’s Peacemaker series and the Fast and Furious franchise. Seeing the multi-time WWE champ on the big screen is always a treat, and this looks like a great combination of comedy, shoot-outs, and the always amazing Alison Brie to make a very memorable high-octane experience.

Freelance arrives in theaters nationwide on October 6, 2023. You can learn more about the film on their official website.
