We got a brand new Out of The Box, Into The Ring: Extreme Edition to kick off the week, and Matt and I are back at it. This week we review an awesome figure from the Official San Francisco Toy Makers ECW line, and it just happens to be ECW champion Mike Awesome. Mike Awesome was known for his Awesomebomb/Powerbomb finisher, which he often used during my favorite matches against the hard-hitting Masato Tanaka in ECW and FMW. During his tenure in FMW, he feuded with another favorite of mine, Hayabusa. Mike Awesome would go on to appear in WCW, WWF/E, and even in TNA Wrestling briefly.
Mike Awesome was one of the most athletic “big” men I had seen while watching wrestling as a kid. He was a balanced mix of speed and power that he showcased in all of his matches. I was always bummed to see him in so many terrible gimmicks during his WCW run as I felt he had all the tools to be a long-time world champion in any organization he competed in.
Mike Awesome passed away in 2007 but his contributions to the sport of pro wrestling will never be forgotten.
